Have you been in situations where you are relatively new in a gathering or a party? Or you may have moved to a place where you don’t know many people? Or it may be a new school, college, workplace? I am sure you have.
Which are the people from these places that immediately strike you with a first impression? Think hard? A party with music, food and drinks – who catches your attention? Is this person standing quietly in a corner or the live wire entertaining everybody with jokes or songs?
If it was a new office for you, then is the sincere quiet person or the outgoing extrovert who was always around to celebrate and laugh? The one who tells you that you are included in all plans and most welcome! the one that makes that extra effort to talk to you when you are new and nervous?
If it was a new housing complex, was it the neighbor who smiled from a distance and disappeared into his or her own house, or was it that lady who invited you with your family the very first day you moved in for a lavish dinner, replete with stories and entertainment?
I am sure you see where I am going with this. Of course there may have been times when that outgoing extrovert person may have turned out to be a disaster later. But at least in the beginning, in those crucial days of first impression (which mostly is the most lasting impression), it is the peppy people, with those lively personalities that stand out and stick in your minds. It’s as simple as this: if you give a good interview, chances are high you’ll get selected for the job.
In this fast competitive mad world, it is important to create that important first impression. It is important that people who need to remember you, do. And if you are a pleasant person, then likelihood surely increases. Of course silent workers are assets to any company, but more often than not, they get ignored in the race to promotions! So do remember to put your best foot forward in those first few crucial minutes of meeting anybody, do not take it for granted or let it slip. People are subconsciously forming those lasting impressions about you in these few minutes, whether you like it or not!
Having said, all of this, I surely want to add that it is not that you jump and woo your audience in the first meeting – and then think that everything is set for life! The quicker the impression formed, the shorter lived it could be. If it is based on dishonestly and lies, sooner or later people will see through it. At the end of it, content is king and if you fake it, you won’t make it!
